Opis

The monograph covers problems of sedimentation of non-granular suspensions, different from most suspensions of industrial origin, manifested mainly in complex structure of solid phase particles. Fractal geometry in recent years became an useful tool used in many scientific fields. One of the directions of development of that tool can be an attempt as using it for describing the morphology and granulometry of solid phase contained in various suspensions.
The solid phase of suspension can come from different sources, such as, from municipal processes (e.g. water treatment) or industrial processes (e.g. metallurgy/steel industry or mineral processing). Suspensions, which one can come across in industry tend to be grainy in nature and the process of solid phase separation of that kind of suspensions is relatively well described. Different situation is represented by non-grainy suspensions. Sedimentation process for them is not well described with current models used for grainy suspensions – using it leads to significant errors, thus different way to describe process of sedimentation for non-grainy suspensions is necessary. By using fractal geometry, specific properties of solid particles, such as shape, porosity and permeability of non-grainy agglomerates can be taken into consideration.
The monograph presents the methods of fractal and multifractal analysis, the structure and properties of non-granular suspensions as well as a description of the process of sedimentation of suspended particles. It also describes the ways in which the quality of the sedimentation process products is determined.
Based on these descriptions, laboratory tests were carried out for the selected non-granular suspension – bentonite suspension. The results from the conducted research allowed to formulate guidelines for the design of sedimentation devices taking into account the fractal dimension.
The monograph is closed with a general conclusions that results from conducted research and also from analysis and modelling of sedimentation process which were made during this study.

Publikacja przedstawia zagadnienie procesu sedymentacyjnej separacji faz zawiesin niegranulowanych.
Przedstawione wyniki badań dowodzą, że wykorzystanie geometrii fraktalnej w modelowaniu efektywności sedymentacji zawiesin nieziarnistych (do obliczania prędkości opadania cząstek) daje lepszą zgodność wyników eksperymentów niż zastosowanie modelu klasycznego.
